Your baby’s spinal curves are shaped through body movement and supported body positions. In the womb a baby’s spine is in a primary C-curve shape. Newborn babies begin lifting their head interacting with the ever present force of gravity. All your baby’s antigravity movements in Tummy Time play – lifting, turning, extending, and flexing her head – develop the neck curve (cervical curve). Around four months, the first reversed curve of the spine becomes visible and you will notice your baby’s shapely neck curve. This developmental process helps us to understand how movement in Tummy Time play influences the developing shape of the baby’s spine.
We will look at how your baby’s movement development shapes the second reversed curve of the spine next week. Follow our Baby Buzz Blog on Mondays.
